About Springback Academy

Springback Academy offers a unique, intensive opportunity for budding dance writers resident in Europe (EU and non-EU) to be mentored by professional dance journalists during an international festival.

It takes place at Aerowaves’ Spring Forward festival in a different European city each year, with 10 participants selected by open call, accompanied by 4 mentors. Each participant reviews a selection of performances at Spring Forward, with short reviews published online during the festival. Afterwards, each writer also contributes a more free-form text that reflects their experiences.

Writers must be competent in written English, but English need not be their first language.

Springback Academy is the entry point for an optional Springback AAA pathway:

Academy the gateway
The short, intensive and mentored review-writing programme that runs alongside Aerowaves’ annual Spring Forward festival.

Assembly & Magazine the route
Participants have the option to follow through from the Academy by contributing to the Magazine, or attending an annual Assembly, which gathers different generations of Springback writers at a European dance festival event where they provide coverage, share skills and debate the wider issues surrounding the making of movement today (for example, Oktoberdans 2022, Oriente Occidente 2023).

Alliance the field
A flexible network formed by the more senior Springback generations, acting as a field of knowledge, support and co-operation for individual and collective initiatives.
